Free swimming for under 16s has been re-introduced at the three local Charnwood pools from 2nd April.
The free swimming was continued until last Summer by Charnwood Borough Council, following the withdrawal of government funding in July 2010, but the new scheme will be funded by Fusion Lifestyle.
The new free sessions at Soar Valley, Loughborough and South Charnwood Leisure Centres, will be held during the general swimming times.
They are available for all under 16-year-olds living in the Borough and youngsters with a 50 per cent discount Wildcard, or Activ8 card, will be able to access free swimming at any time for general and family swmming sessions.
The new timetable is available at the centres and on www.charnwoodleisure.com
To be apply for the free swimming session, under 16s just need to fill in a form available from any of the leisure centres and show proof of age and where they live and they’ll be given a Free Swim membership card, Activ8 and 50 per cent Wildcard holders can simply show their card.
Daren Williamson, general manager at South Charnwood Leisure Centre added: “We noticed quite a drop off when the free swimming stopped so we’re really keen to welcome people back, and hope to see a growth in the number of young swimmers.”

Step in the right direction for fitness, flora and fauna.
Charnwood Borough Council and its local leisure centres have organised seven days of guided local walks, open to all and designed to improve both fitness and understanding of the countryside and nature.
The free walks, planned by local experts in association with the nationally accredited Walking4Health scheme, offer a taster of the larger range of walks that run throughout the year. With different grades for different abilities, there is truly something for everyone.

This year’s inaugural four-mile walk begins on April 16 at 10am at Loughborough Leisure Centre before heading out of town and into the surrounding countryside. The Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood, as well as Cllr David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, will be present to officially launch the new walking season.

Cllr Snartt said: “Our walks programme is getting more and more popular because of the wide range of walks and expert support we provide.
“Walking is an effective way of getting fitter and healthier and the best thing is it is totally free!”

A large number of walkers always attend the annual season launch and the 2012 walk looks set to up the ante and attract a larger number than ever before. Its start in the centre of Loughborough itself is ideal for those without a car, while there is also ample parking for those who require it.

During the launch week, there is a walk planned for every day covering the whole of Charnwood – so there is something to suit all interests and abilities, including:

· April 17 at 10.30am – a walk from Quorn to Rushey Field Farm
· April 18 at 10.30am – a walk from Birstall to Abbey Pumping Station, arranged in partnership with its museum
· April 19 at 10.30am – a walk in the Swithland area
· April 20 at 10am – a three hour nature walk exploring the eastern edge of Charnwood forest
· April 21 at 10am – a two mile walk in Shepshed
· April 22 at 10am – a five mile walk in the Hathern area
For more information Nita Pearson on 01509 634594

For those who love to walk the three leisure centres in the Borough (Loughborough Leisure Centre, Soar Valley Leisure Centre and South Charnwood Leisure Centre) are, for the first time this year, running a brand new outdoor exercise option for both members and non-members to enjoy. The programme is called Open Air Active and each week there are a selection of led activities going on in the open air including buggy walks, Nordic walking and much more.

Mark Hedley, since 1996, has been running holiday soccer schools in Syston for boys and girls of all abilities. He has also worked in many of the local schools providing after school football sessions, dinner time clubs, PE lessons and football birthday parties.

In 1996, Mark was working for Leicester City Council under the banner of Saffron Soccer Schools, followed by a move to Peterborough United F.C. and then finally starting his own business, Mark Hedley Soccer Schools back in 2002.

Marks football history was brought up in Leicester playing for local clubs, Birstall CC, Anstey Swifts and representing Beaumont Leys School, Leicester Boys and the County Squad. In 1991, at 16 years old, he went to play professionally at Chesterfield F.C. when his career was cut short by a series of bad injuries.

He then passed his first coaching award and went into full time coaching, but only in football. Mark holds several qualifications in different sports but football has always been his main passion, having also worked for our local club Leicester City F.C. for nine seasons in the Academy department with the elite young players who were preparing to becoming professional players themselves.

Celebrating his 15th year of providing sport in Syston, Mark will once again be running soccer schools at the Syston Rugby F.C. on Barkby Road, Queniborough during the first week of Easter, Monday to Thursday 2nd to 5th April for five to 13 year olds from 9.30am to 3.00pm daily. This will be followed by an evening development session and all summer camps in the area.

The Olympic Torch will pass through the historic heart of Charnwood when the iconic Flame visits the Borough on Tuesday 3rd July.
The detailed route has now been released which shows how the Torch will start its Charnwood journey at Quorn Station before travelling to Loughborough University, the town centre and out through the centres of Hoton and Wymeswold.
It will take in quintessential Charnwood landmarks such as the Great Central Railway, the Sock Man, the university’s state-of-the-art training facilities used by many Team GB athletes, and some of the Borough’s picturesque village centres.
Residents are being invited to line the relay route to cheer on Torchbearers, some of whom have been selected from Charnwood communities.
Councillor Paul Harley, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “It is an absolute privilege and honour for our Borough to be involved in the Olympic Torch Relay and I’m sure residents will help give it a warm Charnwood welcome. While the relay helps to put Charnwood on the world map, it more importantly brings the Games closer to our communities and gives everyone the chance to play their part in history. It would be brilliant if everyone could line the relay route to show their support for the Games and for Team GB, many of whom are from Loughborough.”
Councillor David Snartt, the Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Being able to cheer on the Olympic Torch through our towns and villages will be an awesome spectacle and I sincerely hope the Olympic spirit can inspire residents to take up more sport in the Borough. It is rare for one event to have the power to bring entire communities together as one, but the Torch Relay is such an event. Come on Charnwood, let’s show our support and cheer on the Torchbearers!”
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, added: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Charnwood’s moment to shine.”
Street-by-street details along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay route can be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay . As well as the street details, it will give proposed start times for when the Olympic Flame will travel through Charnwood.
Residents living in and around the Borough can find out when it will be travelling along their nearest high street, through their town square or past their local village shop.
The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame through Quorn, Loughborough, Hoton and Wymeswold today include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.
LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform which been designed by adidas.
An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on Friday 27th July for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

July 3, 2012 – the Torch’s Charnwood Journey

8.47am
TheTorch set to arrive at Quorn and Woodhouse Station where it will be collected by the first Torchbearer, who will begin the Charnwood leg of the relay along Forest Road and Woodhouse Road before heading onto Loughborough Road. It will then be driven to Loughborough.

9.09am

Eight local primary schools, including Eastfield, Brownlow, St Peter’s, Hall Orchard, St Bartholomew’s, St Michael and All Angels, St Peters and St Pauls and Old Dalby, visited Ratcliffe College on Saturday 3rd March to take part in the Annual Netball Festival. Ratcliffe College had three teams participating and after a blustery, wet and cold start to the day, the sun began to shine, and Ratcliffe Fireflies were crowned as the winners of the tournament, and thus retaining their title from last year.

The tournament was very well supported and congratulations must go to Mr Gilchrist for organising such a fantastic event, with additional thanks to the Junior Staff, umpires, the Parents’ Association, parents, helpers, supporters, catering staff, and most of all to the children who took part. Mr Gareth Lloyd, Headmaster, praised all the participants as he made the presentations, saying “What a wonderful atmosphere we have experienced here today: all of these young, talented sportswomen coming together to enjoy a great time with each other, in the true spirit of sport. Congratulations to you all!”

James Freer’s schools of Tae Kwon Do took part in an annual fight night held at Loughborough College Radmoor Sports centre. It involved three teams of students from Mr Freer’s clubs, Loughborough, Leicester and Syston, one team representing each club and taking part in a friendly tournament.

Each club entered a male and a female team. Loughborough ladies won their division and the Syston men’s team were also triumphant. Overall the Loughborough club won the most points, making them champions of the night for the second year running. The support from other students in the audience was magnificent with all three clubs having people cheering for them. It was a fabulous night of fun for all competitors and spectators and a great end to a great year of achievements for Mr Freer and his students.

The year ahead for the students and the Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain, T.A.G.B, looks to be even more exciting with plenty of things to look forward to, including seminars with grand master C.K Choi, ninth Dan black belt and founder member of Tae Kwon Do, and exclusively for Mr Freer’s students, a seminar with the England National Coach, Master Kenny Walton.

Mr Freer has many of his students preparing for their black belt gradings to join his already 100 plus black belt students. In addition there are four lady black belts, all grading for their fourth degree black belts, who if successful, will give Mr Freer eight fourth degree black belt ladies overall, overtaking the number of fourth dan men in the club, a great achievement for any Tae Kwon Do club and its instructor.

In 2013 the club will celebrate 30 years of the T.A.G.B and Mr Freer will also celebrate his 30 years of training in Tae Kwon Do. Over the coming months and years there is a lot to look forward to in the world of Tae Kwon Do and it is an exciting sport to be part of!
