DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Belgrave St Peter’s was established to help preserve the fabric of one of the oldest buildings in Leicester and to ensure that it remains\, in some way\, a useful part of the local area. St Peter’s is an 800 years old de-consecrated church\, which has remained empty and unused for a number of years. \nOne of our aims is to make the plight of this lovely building known to as many people as possible\, and to help us do this we are arranging a series of talks which gives us the chance to introduce you to a speaker who is expert in their particular field and also to tell you something about our plans for the future. \nWe would like to invite you and your members to join us at our next talk\, which will be given by Dr Megan Leyland\, who is Senior Properties Historian for English Heritage. Dr Leyland will be discussing ‘Conscientious Objectors in World War One – the Richmond Sixteen and Leicester’.  \nThe Richmond Sixteen were a group of “absolutist” British conscientious objectors during the First World War. Conscripted into the British Army in 1916\, they refused to undertake even non-combatant military duties. Dr Leyland discusses this fascinating\, but little-known aspect of the Great War. \nThe talk will take place at Claremont Street Methodist Church in Belgrave on Wednesday 17th October at 7.30pm.
