Film Reviews by Adam Ray Palmer

We are half way through the year, let that sink in! Whilst you’re at it, Toy Story 4 is out this month… now let that sink in! This month sees a good six or so films being released, but none more so than the three I have previewed for you below.
As the Summer dawns on us, so does The Beatles, some mutants and of course Buzz and Woody. Let’s get to it…
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
First up this month is the next instalment in the X-Men franchise. Dark Phoenix comes three years after the mutants last outing in Apocalypse where all hell broke loose. Now, set nearly a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, the X-Men are national heroes going on increasingly risky missions. When a solar flare hits them during a rescue mission in space, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. The crux? It’s up to the rest of the team whether her life is worth more than mankind. This movie serves as writer Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut after penning the last two X-Men movies. Dark Phoenix looks set to follow in the darker footsteps of 2017’s Logan and pack a bigger punch than Apocalypse did.
In cinemas: 5th June 2019
Toy Story 4
It’s happening! Later this month, after nearly a decade without a Toy Story film, Toy Story 4 is finally released. We’ve had emotional trailers, tear-jerking posters and on 21st June, we can all officially cry in the cinema theatres. This fourth instalment is certainly the deepest movie yet from the Pixar and Disney gang. It’s set a few years after Andy has given the toys to Bonnie, and now they must go on another adventure. When a new toy called “Forky” joins Woody and the crew, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy. This is director Josh Cooley’s debut as a feature film shot-caller. His previous writing credits includes Inside Out, so that’s an inkling at how emotional this movie is. There’s been no confirmed talks of this outing being the final one, but both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have stated the ending is a “moment in film history” – brace yourselves, people!
In cinemas: 21st June 2019
Yesterday
The final film this month is a mushy British comedy from a creative duo that boast multiple awards in their own fields. Yes, director Danny Boyle has teamed up with writing guru Richard Curtis for a narrative musical film wrapped around a host of songs by The Beatles. Taking the central protagonist role is Himesh Patel (yes Tamwar from Eastenders) starring as a struggling musician who realises he’s the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles. What ensures is a coming-of-age style comedy where Jack Malik (Patel) navigates a world that has become his oyster following instant fame. With the door between his old life and his new closing, Jack will need to get back to where he once belonged and prove that all you need is love. Lily James, Kate McKinnon, James Corden and Ed Sheeran are on hand to offer acting support in this sugary, One Chance-style picture.
In cinemas: 28th June 2019
And there you have it for June, guys. Next month is another big 31 days… make sure you buckle up for a hefty Summer of film before the festival season hits us again! Have a great month!
