Syston Band
It’s been a busy summer season for the band.
Highlights include their regular bandstand concerts in Melton and at Monk’s Rest Gardens in Humberstone. In June Syston Band was honoured to be part of Charnwood’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. Early July, on the only rainy day in a fortnight, the band opened Syston Brassfest, a daylong celebration of all things brass (and a bit more).
This was the second Syston Brassfest, a showcasing of the wealth of Syston’s musical talent. Beginning with a rousing rendition of the ‘Post Horn Gallop’ Syston Band opened proceeding and coming to a foot-tapping close with Syston Swing Band, it also included ‘Charlie’s Angels, Syston’s popular youth groups ‘Understated’ and ‘Flare’, and as a break from the brass, a set from ‘The Dog and Gun Ukulele Band’. With the Dog and Gun offering hospitality, Syston Scouts manning their famous barbeque and Syston Band providing delicious pancakes the event was once more a rousing success.
BrassfestUK is a nationwide event designed to promote Brass Banding at every level. On a designated weekend each year it encourages local Brass Bands to organise a free Festival of Brass event for everyone in their community. Emma Gibson, a member of Syston Band and Syston Swing Band, has embraced the concept with enthusiasm, energy and dedication. Together with Alex Williamson and a stalwart group of helpers she organised a fabulous day of music, enjoyed by all. Highlights of all the day’s performances can be found on the Syston Band Facebook page.
