Breast Screening Unit not visiting Syston Health Centre

Many ladies ‘of a certain age’ will be familiar with receiving invitations to the mobile breast screen unit, usually sited on the Syston Health Centre car park for several weeks at a time. I was surprised to learn that due to a management decision at UHL, the unit will not be visiting this year.
As a result anyone who is due for screening is being sent an appointment at the General Hospital.
For those who do not drive, this will involve two buses each way, and take at least 90 minutes travel time each way from Syston. For those living in the villages around Syston the journeys will be longer, and indeed in some cases there is little or no public transport available. The appointment itself only takes a few minutes.
I appreciate that certain tests/ screening can only be done by attending a hospital. However this is clearly not the case with breast screening. The fact that the mobile unit has, in the past, spent several weeks sited at Syston, indicates that a significant number of ladies have been seen each time. Therefore a significant number of ladies will be inconvenienced by the change.
Whilst I have made my feelings known to PILS, the Patient Liaison Service for UHL, I am only a lone voice. If ladies simply accept the situation without comment, the danger is that we will not see the mobile unit in Syston in the future.
I write in the hope that you will publish this information so that those who have been inconvenienced, along with anyone else who is concerned about this change, will contact PILS, the phone number is 0808 178 8337 and add their voices to mine.
