On July 19th 1998, Maureen Lawson’s husband passed away in LOROS. Rachael, their daughter, had just finished her first year at university and over the following months they thought about how they could raise funds for the hospice. Since 2000 Maureen has been organising ‘From Classics to Jazz’ concerts with Rachael on clarinet and saxophone and Stephen Waterhouse on piano – two very talented musicians.
The concert arranged for April 13th 2019 had to be postponed at very short notice as Rachael had to have a second surgery for malignant melanoma. Everything was arranged for the concert to take place on April 4th this year and again, it had to be postponed due to the present situation. Maureen thought long and hard for an idea to raise the money the concert would have generated and as they should have gone to Norfolk for a few days after the concert, an idea came to mind. Maureen is 79, with various long-term health and mobility issues and uses pedals as part of her daily exercise. With this in mind, she decided to do a virtual cycle ride to Holme-next-the-Sea and back, a journey of 190 miles.
Rachael is ‘pedalling’ with her every day and if for any reason Maureen falls by the wayside, she will complete the journey. On May 6th, her granddaughter’s birthday, Maureen ‘set off’ from LOROS and at the same time Rachael ‘set off’ from Hull. They ‘met up’ in Kings Lynn on May 31st and continued their journey to Holme, ‘arriving’ there on June 6th. As Maureen had managed to pedal three miles every day, they decided to extend their journey and ‘visit’ some of their favourite places. They have ‘been’ to Wells-next-the Sea for fish and chips and ‘arrived’ at Thursford on June 13th to see the traction engines and fair organs (her husband Jim’s passion). They then ‘visited’ Great Bircham Windmill which they have climbed many times in years gone by before ‘setting off’ on their homeward journey, passing through Sandringham, Kings Lynn and reaching Wisbech on June 29th.
They are now ‘making their way back’ to LOROS, aiming to reach there by July 19th, the 22nd anniversary of when her husband passed away. Maureen will have pedalled 222 miles and Rachael 250 miles. Hopefully they can raise at least £500 for LOROS. They have already raised £415 and if you can help them achieve their goal, they would be extremely grateful.
