When the ‘Classics to Jazz’ concert scheduled for April 4th this year had to be cancelled, Maureen Lawson thought of a way to try to raise the money for LOROS that the concert would have generated. As her family should have gone to Norfolk for a few days after the concert, she decided to do a virtual cycle ride from LOROS to Norfolk and back on her exercise pedals, ‘travelling’ three miles a day.
When Maureen ‘set off’ on May 6th, it really was a journey into the unknown as she hadn’t managed to pedal more than two miles a day before then. Rachael, her daughter, ‘set off’ from Hull at the same time, ready to complete the journey if Maureen couldn’t. As the days went by, pedalling became easier, and when they ‘met up’ in King’s Lynn on May 31st, the delights of Norfolk beckoned! Lavender scones at Norfolk Lavender, a visit to Holme-next-the-Sea where they had holidayed many times before ‘heading’ to Wells-next-the-Sea for fish and chips. They then visited Thursford to see the traction engines and fair organs (Jim, her late husband’s passion). Great Bircham Windmill – which they had climbed many times over the years – was their next destination, followed by a ride through the Sandringham Estate, and homeward bound via King’s Lynn.
After pedalling three miles a day for 74 days, a total of 222 miles (250 for Rachael), they arrived back at LOROS as planned on July 19th, the 22nd anniversary of when Maureen’s husband Jim passed away. Their journey is now complete and so far, they have raised £875, exceeding their original £500 target. They would now love to reach £1000 for this worthwhile cause.
Their grateful thanks go to everyone who has kindly helped them achieve this. Should anyone still wish to donate, their Just Giving page A Journey for LOROS www.justgiving.com/fundraising/maureen-lawson will stay open until the middle of August, and cheques made payable to LOROS (with Maureen’s ‘A Journey for LOROS’ on the back) may still be sent here to Syston Town News, 55 Goodes Lane, Syston, Leics. LE7 2JL, and we will forward them to Maureen.
Thank you again from Maureen and Rachael.
