Age Concern Syston are a well-established, trusted local small charity. For over 40 years we have been providing advice, help and support for the elderly and disabled within Syston and the local area. Our usual services comprise of group activities, including coffee mornings, day care groups, respite care group and outings using our disabled persons’ minibus.
Since March 2020 all these services had to stop and we very quickly had to adapt our working practices to help the most vulnerable people within Syston and the surrounding villages. With the support of our wonderful team of volunteers we have provided a service to the community for collecting and delivering shopping, prescriptions, gardening, befriending and offering any other support required throughout such a difficult time.
Without their support we could not have provided these services. Following the number of calls and feedback received during this time, we have identified the need for these services to continue and therefore will now be incorporated along with our regular activities for the foreseeable future.
These changes meant that all our income and fundraising also stopped which left us in a very difficult position financially. We receive no direct funding from the government or Age UK and rely solely on applying for grants, fundraising events and donations.
We began the process of applying for grants to enable us to continue to provide this support within our community and we are very grateful to the Leicestershire County Council Community Fund who very kindly provided us with a grant for £5,000 which allowed us to continue until the beginning of July. ?Following this we were successful with an application from The National Lottery Community Fund which provided us with further funding of £5,325 until the 1st September.
We have now just received confirmation of a further grant of £5,000 from the Leicestershire & Rutland Community Foundation which will enable us to continue until 24th November.
We would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all the volunteers who have kindly given up their time helping people within Syston and the surrounding areas and for their continuing support throughout the recent crisis. They have all shown so much care and dedication and although many have now returned to work they are still supporting us and the community wherever they can.
We would also like to thank the Syston Health Centre and the Chemists in Syston for their continuing support and for working with us during this very busy time. Much appreciation and thanks to all who have been supporting us and who have made donations to our charity.
Our office has been busier than ever throughout this crisis but it has been wonderful getting to know so many lovely people and being able to keep in touch with you all.
We realise that many of you are now venturing out again so we would like to wish you all good health and for you all to keep safe and hopefully we will be able to meet up with many of you when life begins to feel a little more normal again.
We are constantly looking at guidelines to determine when we can resume our usual services and how we can diversify in order to support the community and will let everyone know when this will be safe to do so.
Our AGM will be on 9th September this year. Usually this would be held in person at the Methodist Church Hall with the support of our Trustees, Members and the general public. However, due to the present situation, it has now been agreed with our management committee that the AGM this year will take place by postal votes.
If anyone would like to be involved, either with the meeting or feel that they would like to become more involved with the work that we do here as a trustee or volunteer please contact us at the office and we can discuss your interests.
