Wreake and Soar Valley Athletics Club – Finish Top of the East League!

Wreake and Soar Valley Athletics Club is a Syston based club, commonly known for its medal winning juniors, but over the summer, the adults teamed up with the juniors, worked together and made headlines of their own – finishing top of the East League.

The Lockdown League series consisted of six virtual events across varying distances from one mile to 10km. Club members completed their efforts in all manner of locations, but mainly on local roads and trails.

The club had a fantastic turnout with a total of 47 members of all abilities taking part! 21 were from their fast developing crop of junior athletes.

Individually there were some phenomenal performances across the series with an incredible 21 top 10 performances from the Masters and Seniors right through to the Under13’s.

The series started and ended with races over 10km and there were noticeable improvements in times over the summer months. Senior lady Kirsty Addy improved her 10km time by over three and a half minutes and Under20 athlete Zach Spence took a whopping 4 minutes 37 seconds off his time.

Ladies Captain Michelle Findon said “The Lockdown League was a fantastic way to keep our club together while we couldn’t train or race together, we shared our routes, times and post-race pictures meaning that everyone could feel the excitement unfold over a race weekend. Our adult section is growing and we loved the opportunity to compete alongside the juniors as one team! It was fantastic to see so many personal best performances coming in week after week”

Nick Castledine finished 4th overall in the V40 category and said the best part of the whole league experience for him was “The messages of support during the race weekend and seeing everyone (of all ages and abilities) giving it their all”

Rachel Vickers runs for Wreake and Soar Valley in the V50 age category and said “it was a great opportunity for everyone to feel like they were contributing, regardless of their pace” she added “we all put on our club vests and ran together as one team, it didn’t matter whether we were running a 5 minute mile or a 10 minute mile, everyone’s time counted which was just brilliant”

Wreake and Soar Valley Athletics Club are now able to accept new members.
