Syston Sailing Club Celebrates with Sea Shanty!

Syston Sailing Club is celebrating getting back on the water with its very own sea shanty!
The catchy tune – Hey Ho Rum and Cake! – was written in lockdown by committee member Elaine Trewick as a way of helping members to keep in touch and have fun.
Telling the story of how Covid-19 forced the club to shut, with sailors ‘missing their mates in the Sunday race’, it was practised and recorded on Zoom and also by the lake when the club was finally able to reopen at the end of March.
The video has now been shared @RYAMidlands on Facebook with club sailor Gareth James leading on guitar and fellow members joining in as backing singers.
Elaine, who crews a double-handed boat at the club, said: “We’re all singing at different times because it had to be done individually but we had a lot of fun and it kept us all in touch over lockdown. It even got some of us to know each other a bit better so it’s really brought the club together.”
Watersports were among the first to be allowed back when government restrictions eased after lockdown three and club members are now looking forward to swapping singing for a summer of sailing back on their lake.
Commodore Jez Lewis added: “I think it was great for some of our members to try and keep our spirits up with some light entertainment and I would like to thank Elaine for motivating the members into verse. We have missed sailing at our club and seeing friends, now our mental wellbeing has been lifted as we all start to do the sport we enjoy and love.”
