SPOTLIGHT – THE JOURNAL OF SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL, November 2021, written by Catherine Voyce
Pavilion Reconfiguration and Refurbishment, Memorial Park
The works are delayed until w/c 18th October, this is due to several of the contractors testing positive for Covid-19.
Park Bookings
We have held a number of events on Central Park during the summer. All have been managed carefully in terms of Covid-19 protection for the public and event organisers.
Food Gusto held their excellent food festival on the sunny Saturday of the August bank holiday. Visitors could experience the taste of local and regional producers, with an array of food and drink on offer. This was combined with live music and children’s rides; there was definitely something for everyone.
Funtopia returned to Central Park on 14th and 15th August with their high energy children’s event and an assortment of inflatable children’s rides.
Additional fun for children was provided by a Kids Fun Day on 4th September, where walking dinosaurs created great excitement along with some funfair rides.
Billy Bates Fair brought their huge variety of amazing rides for all the family for the week 17th to 26th September.
Week commencing 11th October brought the wonderful world of entertainment from Pinders Circus to Central Park with original acts creating a perfect family event.
Remembrance Sunday, 14th November 2021
This is being run by the Royal British Legion and supported by Syston Town Council. There will not be a parade this year but all are invited to pay their respects at the War Memorial in Central Park from 10.30am. A small service will take place, the last post will be played by Syston Town Band and a two minutes’ silence will be held at 11am. The Barkby Road Chapel will have its own Remembrance Day tribute in the form of tributes, provided by the wonderful “Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery.”
Local churches will also be holding Remembrance Day services, check your local church for details.
Christmas Event 2021
Sadly there will not be a Christmas
Event this year as planning for such an occasion starts twelve months prior to the event taking place and therefore, we could not commit that early on in the year. Thank you to the volunteers that normally give their time to the assistance in arranging our Christmas Event, as most did offer their services again this year.
Syston and District Cemetery – wins national award
Syston & District Cemetery won a Silver Award in this national competition.
Competition judges said “the team at Syston & District Cemetery performed exceptionally throughout the extensive judging period which is focused on Industry Standards, Environmental Issues and Good Practice”
This award is such a wonderful pat on the back for our team, it acknowledges that we really go above and beyond to try and provide a reliable, friendly and quality service. All at Syston Town Council are delighted.
The Cemetery of the Year Awards are supported and endorsed by the following leading industry Associations:
* Memorial Awareness Board (MAB)

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery – Barkby Road
The Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery continue to work very hard at the cemetery and Chapel. The new rainbow mosaic will be installed in front of the noticeboard during October.
