St Peter and St Paul Church News

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul holds it’s regular services on Wednesday mornings at 9.30 and Sundays at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend. We ask that you wear masks and sanitise your hands on entry to the church. The Parish Parochial Council held its meeting in September and made the decision that singing would resume during parish services. Decisions regarding the inclusion of other traditional features were made.
We are continuing with morning prayer on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9am, live on Facebook.
We also invite you to our evening service of compline at 8pm on Wednesdays. If you would like to join us via zoom please contact Reverend Biddy who will forward the link.
There will be a remembrance service on Sunday the 14th November at 10am followed by a wreath laying at the memorial. All are welcome.
During November there will also be a remembrance service at Barkby at 6pm and on the 14th, there will be a service of light on the 28th at 6pm.
The Barkby Christmas Event will be taking place on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of November. Look out for flyers for this.
On Saturday 3rd October friends and family gathered as Reverend Biddy Saunders was priested in Syston together with Reverends Crystal MacAllister and Paul Emberton. It was a deeply significant service where invited people represented those who couldn’t be there. A truly joyful occasion filled with prayers and music. Bishop Martin presided and The Reverend Canon Steve Benoy, the Director of Vocation and Formation of Peterborough Diocese, preached.
Reverend Biddy looks forward to welcoming many of you in the future here in Syston and at Barkby.
This was followed by Revd Biddy celebrating at her first Communion Service with a congregation from both Barkby and Syston.
Revd Biddy was supported by Revd Jackie Bullen who was the last Curate here in Syston. It was a delight to hear her preach again. Refreshments in the hall followed.
Information regarding services and special events can be found on the church notice boards or website where you will also find contact details.
Apologies for the information error for the memorial service which took place at Barkby Church on the 31st October NOT in Syston.
Harvest Festival 12th September
Once again the flower arranging team led by Felicity Austin did an amazing job of transforming the church with their flower arrangements, especially the windows and the font.
For the past 100 years a member of the Borderick family has made the Harvest Loaf for one of Syston’s churches. For about twenty years Sheila has made the loaf for the church. Sadly, Sheila passed away very recently, so we asked Robert Martin, Syston’s very own baker to make the Harvest loaf for us this year. Robert agreed to do so willingly, and has most generously donated the lovely harvest loaf to the church.
We give thanks to Robert for his generosity.
We shall long hold the memory of the many loaves Sheila presented to the church.
The Service of the Word was led by Revd Biddy Saunders and Sue Essex, including singing three hymns. What would Harvest be without “We Plough the Fields and Scatter the Good Seed on the Land”! The talk was given by Theresa Morgan encouraging us to think more about our spiritual development and less on our possessions and ourselves.
In the afternoon the church was open for anyone who wished to come and look for themselves. Several people took advantage and were very impressed.
This time families enjoyed being back in the church for a trial. Conversation and thoughts were encouraged as families created journey sticks. Whilst stopping at stations to reflect on gathering, sharing and celebrating, everyone collected items like an individually chosen leaf, a creative drawing and a bell to remember their reflections.
The final station was for prayer, lead by Canon John Leonard. Families said the Lord’s Prayer and the Grace together.
The journey concluded with refreshments.
It was lovely to be back in church, and plan our November event on Sunday 7tth November where we look forward to gathering together in church again and sharing a family lunch. If you are interested in joining in please contact John or Jane Leonard on 0116 269 2691.
