Letter from 1895 Follow Up
We published a letter found in a house renovation in Turn St., in the November issue, this was then shared on a facebook page called ‘Sometime Syston…. Your Memories’.
The closed group page was set up in 2019 but developed over the pandemic, it states that it is for sharing memories and photos of Syston, which will run for the duration of these difficult times, … the rule is to respect others … unkind comments are not welcome. Enjoy engaging, reconnecting and reminiscing with others.
The response to our article and the letter was amazing and engaged a lot of debate regarding the name we couldn’t decipher.
Here are just a few:
‘What a brilliant find.’
‘Fascinating read. What a lovely “find”. Thanks for sharing on here.’
‘Could the name have been spelt Lonie?’
‘I loved this article. I can see that there is a Mrs Ada Greasley (born in Syston about 1865) and her husband, Mr Thomas Cook Greasley (a railway labourer) living in Turn Street in the 1891 census and the 1901 census. They did take in lodgers.’
There was a lot more discussion about the Greasley and Freer families.
Thank you to Steve Quinn for sharing the article and for allowing us to share some of the comments in the newspaper.
A fascinating find and we look forward to sharing more memories of Syston in future issues.
