Thurmaston Bowls Club President’s Address 2022

As a member of Thurmaston Bowls Club it is a privilege to be able to serve as club President for the season 2022 and I look forward to welcoming you to return to a new and uninterrupted bowling season.
Having dealt with the challenges of the last two years, it will be nice to get back on the green again. We may not be completely out of the woods yet and still need “to keep safe” but if we have learned anything from the last two seasons it is that we have the tenacity, resilience, and the commitment for our club to succeed.
I would like to thank our previous president for all his hard work and support over the last few years and to all the people whose hard work sometimes may go unnoticed. I am grateful for what they may have done and continue to do to make our club a success.
This coming year we have so much on with competitions, galas, playing in two leagues, many social events and even an away game/visit to the seaside at Hunstanton. We might not all play at top level, but we can all contribute by playing in roll ups, friendlies and joining in our socials calendar.
My grandson recently asked me why I played bowls “coz isn’t it just for the old peeps?” after smiling, realising that as a 65 year old great grandmother he doesn’t see me as old, I told him “Actually our latest member is twelve years old and is shaping up into a cracking little player and don’t forget the health benefits”. Playing bowls burns calories, increases muscle tone, improves concentration, reduces stress and you can soak up natural vitamin D, not to mention the comradery and social side of things. He laughed and said, “ok nan”.
We are a small friendly club and are fortunate to have some dedicated members, a very talented coach, and a super green. However, no club can survive without new members, new ideas and new talents. With this in mind, I would like to welcome new bowlers to join us in a sport for all ages abilities and disabilities alike. So, tell your friends about our buddie nights on Tuesday evenings from April and the weekend set aside for new members and a chance to practice on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April, and don’t forget I will be opening the green on Sunday 3rd April 2022.
Finally, I hope you will all sign up to the club competitions and I wish you all a successful and enjoyable season whether playing in friendlies, leagues, competitions (both club and parks), or just having a laugh at a roll up. Whatever way you decided to join in, please enjoy being a member of Thurmaston Bowls Club.
