On Sunday 12th June, your Editor was invited to attend this service of rededication of the Leicestershire and Rutland 63rd Annual Standard Bearers Association at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.
In attendance was the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Col Murray Coleville TD OBE, Phil Walden RBL East Midlands Membership Council Rep., Darren Rickman (Chairman of Syston Branch) Bob and Meg Hendry (President of Syston RBL Branch), Julie Driver leicestershire and Rutland Parade Marshal, Cllr Tom Barkley (Chairman Syston Town Council) Catherine Voyce (Town Manager Syston Town Council), Helen Parker-Bates (Syston Town Band), Miss Sarah Clarke, Standard Bearers and members of the public.
The Service was lead by Rev’d Father John Leonard with appropriate hymns and a reading by Col Murray Coleville TD OBE, Sarah Clarke sang Land of Hope and Glory. It also included The Act of Remembrance with Helen Parker-Bates playing the Last Post and Reveille. Followed by the Kohima Epitaph read by Julie Driver Leicestershire and Rutland Parade Marshal. The service ended with the National Anthem followed by the blessing.
The Standard Bearer Party then proceeded to the memorial at the side of the Church and Mrs Bertrum laid a wreath.
All attendees were invited to gather in the Syston conservative Club were a buffet and entertainment was provide by Sarah Clarke who was given a beautiful Dame Vera Lynn RBL brooch and asked to be the Syston Branch’s official singer. Sarah said she was delighted to have been asked and looks forward to performing at future RBL events in Syston.
