2022 Classic Car Run
Classic Car Run for Rainbow’s Hospice for Children and Young People
This was the eighth year that Syston Residents Terry Farmer and Vicki Friend, with their friend from Anstey Mick Squire, organised this run to raise money for the Rainbow’s Hospice for Children and Young People.
As last year, the weather forecast was not good but in the end was beautiful and dry, an important factor with quite a number of the 41 cars being open topped!
Thanks to the generosity of the owners of Stonehurst Family Farm in Mountsorrel we were able to gather and distribute the route books to the participants. Syston resident Dave Morgan directed the cars as they arrived into the field set apart for us. There was the opportunity to purchase hot drinks and enjoy a bacon cob because Emily opened the restaurant!
After the entrants had admired the cars, once they had arrived and met up with friends from previous runs, they set off, after 9am, to follow a route driving towards eastern Leicestershire through some beautiful countryside and villages, Barkby, Tilton, Loddington, Braunston in Rutland, passing south of Rutland Water to circle round towards Edith Weston and on to Edmonthorpe and eventually arrive at Wymondham Windmill for a refreshment break; after travelling nearly 49 miles.
Once the facilities there had been explored, (you could climb to the top of the windmill if you so wished!), and when ready, the drivers set off again and continued on a shorter 28 mile journey passing more interesting villages such as Bescaby, Eaton, Bradmore and Bunny to arrive at the Nottingham
Heritage Transport Museum at Ruddington.
Once there they were parked up as directed to join the regular first Sunday in the month Classic Car Meet so there was a feast of old vehicles to admire and talk about. There was a lot to enjoy, the most interesting being the old buses! There was also a model railway display and several larger engines pulling passengers for £1 a ride, great fun.
The cafe was doing a roaring trade and several of our members had booked for a Sunday Lunch which was very enjoyable!
It was quite a day but very satisfying and thanks to the people at Stonehurst Family Farm, Wymondham Windmill and the Nottingham Heritage Museum and most of all the participants we raised £1000, a magnificent total.
