New Barkby W.I.
A three in one evening for New Barkby members. President Shirley Franklin presided over the November meeting. ‘Jerusalem’ was sung. Then followed the ordinary meeting.
Next the Annual meeting. Dawn Haynes, deputising for Angela Montague (Secretary) read out the report of the year’s events plus bye-laws. The Treasurer’s financial statement gave a good result on the Institute’s accounts.
In the Presidents report, Shirley Franklin thanked the committee and members for all their support. There had been an excellent turn-out for the Platinum Jubilee celebration for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s reign; Joy Goulden made a delicious cake for the occasion and everyone made their own version of a Coronation Crown. Everyone can take pride in what has been achieved during the year.
Alma Wright, a member and W.I. Adviser, took nominations for President. Shirley Franklin was re-elected to serve for another year in office.
During the evening, Wendy Taylor presented Shirley with a President’s Brooch. Wendy is a former member of Queniborough W.I., which has now closed.
Thank you to Joy Goulden for bringing in a bag of items she had knitted. These can be filled in shoebox appeals for children in challenging parts of the world.
At refreshment time, Hannah Coombe, a founding member of the group ‘Grow Give Live’ came to give a short talk about a project being considered, to create a sustainable community garden, off Glebe Way, Syston – a one and a half acre plot of council land. There is support for this project from Syston Town Council and Charnwood Borough Council. The President thanked Hannah for all the information regarding the proposal.
The competition winner for a poppy related item was Louisa Chapman with a book of W.W.1 war letters and the raffle prize winner was Sadie Cave. Tea hostesses were Jean Brutnall and Joy Goulden.
The following week there was an evening meal at the Queen Victoria public house to celebrate New Barkby W.I.’s 97th birthday. Thank you to Angela Montague for organising this, everyone who attended enjoyed the occasion.
