Syston in the 20th Century Book Two Is Still Available
Readers may like to know that although Syston in the 20th Century Book one is virtually sold out, the companion book which tells the story of Syston people ‘at work and play’ is still available in nine local shops including Gamble and Hollis, Syston Card Shop, Peberdy’s Newsagent’s and the council offices. This second book would make a very good Christmas present for anyone with connections to the town. It tells of all aspects of life in Syston throughout the 20th century, from how children amused themselves, the local schools, cinema in Syston, how people spent Christmas, the annual fair and local clubs and societies. Chapters on local industries, the health service and some prominent Syston men and women also offer fascinating insights into life in the past. If you already have book one you can be sure that book two complements book one perfectly.
Our photo from book two shows the staff of Syston Post Office photographed outside the office on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. It is entitled ‘The Remnants, 1909.’ Amazingly Syston Post Office is still in the same building 113 years later!
