New Barkby W.I.
New Barkby W.I’s December meeting was a party for Christmas, with a quiz, refreshments, food and a sing-a-long of seasonal songs.
President Shirley Franklin presided over that evening and also the January meeting. ‘Jerusalum’ was sung, followed by business matters. After that members braced themselves, from their seats to listen to a talk, with power point presentation, by Adrian Walker who, with other volunteers from the Loros Charity, undertook a 192 mile coast to coast walk from St. Bees Head to Robin Hoods Bay in Yorkshire, treading in the footsteps of the late Alfred Wainwright. The trek passes from Cumbria to Yorkshire and passed through many towns and villages during the 14 day journey. Some days there was only a nine mile distance covered, because of the terrain, but having stayed over at youth hostels or Bed and Breakfast accommodation, the end goal was achieved.
Photographs of the group were taken at the beginning of each day’s journey with happy smiling faces – before the next stage of their mission in the differing weather conditions.
All this from the comfort of a warm meeting room for W.I. members.
The vote of thanks was given by Dawn Haynes. The competition for a walking related item was won by Angela Montague who brought along a Walking stick with badges of different paces visited. She also won the raffle prize.
This evening there was no time for refreshments, due to the over-run of time, an old enemy.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st February and the subject for the evening will be ‘Medical Detection Dogs’ at Syston Community Centre with a 7.30pm start. Visitors are always to be welcomed.
A happy New Year, 2023, to all readers of Syston Town News.
