Local author Felicity Austin sets the scene for your memoirs below;
‘It was the coronation in 1953 which saw the first big surge in the number of television sets; some 100,000 new sets were sold that year. People gathered round their own and neighbours’ sets, sometimes with a screen magnifier in place to enlarge the picture, to watch the procession and the ceremony, before taking part in street parties and other celebrations. We lived only about four miles from Windsor, so although I was only six years old, I was taken to see the floodlighting of Windsor Castle and the parade of decorated boats and rafts on the Thames that evening. Like most other things in those days, the bunting that we hung outside our house was home-made; I remember my mother cutting up white sheets and my father’s worn-out blue pyjamas, but I don’t remember what the red fabric was although I think it must have been some old sheeting dyed…. And of course every schoolchild in the country was given a souvenir mug.
Have you still got yours?
