Lougborough crematorium was packed in April for the funeral of Thurmaston man James Frederick Sherwood Green, known as Sher.
He was carried into the chapel and given a guard of honour by his fellow bowlers of Thurmaston Bowls Club who, along with many family and friends, had come to pay their respects to this very popular man.
Sher was born in 1947 in Leicester General Hospital to parents Cyril and Dorothy Green and lived all his life on Sandiacre Drive, Thurmaston.
He went to the Junior School in Thurmaston village then on to Roundhill where he was a prefect. He then went on to obtain a qualification from the Metropolitan College at Lougborough in book keeping and accounts.
During his working life Sher worked for John Holroyds, Holcroft Castings and Forgings Limited where he was an accounts clerk and then spent 10 years as section leader of the accounts department. From there he went into a variety of building jobs which he did until he retired, whatever job Sher did he was considered a perfectionist.
Sher met his wife Monica when she was 18 and they were engaged in 1969 and married in 1972. He was known as a meticulous man and used his accountancy skills when he took on the role as treasurer for Thurmaston Bowls Club, he played for the club for nearly 25 years and enjoyed a lot of success playing the sport he loved and won the Champion of Champions in recent years.
He also played a big part in establishing and maintaining the new pavilion on Elizabeth Park which was opened in 2014.
He was a well known figure in the area as he took his daily walk to Cossington, he enjoyed watching comedies, antique programmes and sport.
He played dominoes, snooker and cards at the Conservative Club. He loved his garden which always looked perfect, enjoyed crossword puzzles and he and Monica travelled to many places around the world. Monica would like to thank everyone for their support and helping to raise £940 for Pancreatic Cancer UK from the collection held in memory of Sher.
