Grow Give Live Update
At our Garden Café in May, we drew our big Spring Raffle.
Congratulations to our winners, and a huge thank you to everyone who supported the raffle, in particular, the local businesses who supported with prizes: East Midlands Railway, Giant Bikes, The Pharmacie Arms, Paper Moon, Delish, Roots Farm Shop, Daisy Rose Jewellery and Tesco Syston. All proceeds from the raffle go towards the upkeep of the community garden spaces we maintain around town.
Speaking of which, by now, the community centre planters will be looking healthy, with strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs all starting to take off. Over the winter, we planted ‘green manure’ – it may just have looked like a load of weeds, but when it’s dug into the soil, it acts as natural fertiliser.
‘Fruit corner’ at Scotia Press is looking good, with raspberry canes (they may look like dead twigs but give them a few months and see the magic happen!), strawberries, redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes planted. The potatoes are coming through, and carrot seeds have been sown – we’ll see if they come up!
Up at the allotment, our plot is really starting to take shape, thanks to the volunteers who come along every Friday from 10am to 12pm. We’ve been sanding and painting the shed, keeping the grass cut, and getting planters set up – we have onions, parsnips, carrots, beetroot and swiss chard planted – fingers crossed there’ll soon be plenty of fresh produce to share back into the community. If you’re free on a Friday morning, come along and see what we’re doing on the allotment (plot 73B, first on the left as you go into the allotments on Upper Church Street) – there’s always a cuppa and cheeky biscuit available. If you want to chip in at weekends, keep an eye on our Facebook page (facebook.com/growgivelive/), Instagram (@growgivelivesyston), or email growgivelivesyston@gmail.com to join our mailing list to keep up to date with our planned activities.
In the meantime, why not have a walk around town to check out all the planting spots? From the station, to Scotia Press, up to the community centre then on the allotment – a good way to stretch your legs!
