Are You Looking for a New Activity in 2025?
Have you ever tried lawn bowls? It is a sport open to everyone of every age.
If you enjoy being in the outdoors and are looking for something to challenge you and meet new people, then why not visit Syston Bowling Club, right in the centre of Syston for over 90 years.
Bowling helps build friendships, enjoy learning a new sport and taking part in competitions during the summer season. Then in the winter, there are indoor activities to keep the fun going all year.
One lady, Sheila who joined recalls how she became a member and would encourage more ladies to join.
Syston bowling club will be holding an open day in April and hope to encourage new members especially ladies.
It is a great club to join and make friends and socialise, it gets you out of the house with some gentle exercise on a lovely sunny day what could be better. We stay for a bite to eat, a cuppa or a drink we are a very friendly group of people. I was a very quiet person with very little confidence. I just went to work and looked after my family, now I’m alone after my husband passing away and family are all grown up.
A five minute bus journey changed all that. The lady who sat next to me chatted about the rain as you do saying that she should have been bowling but was cancelled because of the weather.
In those few minutes she had invited me to the club, but by then it was time for me to get off the bus and it was too late for exchanging phone numbers. I thought it would be the end of this story but my daughter phoned the club which resulted in me being invited to their closing day lunch on 28th September 2008.
It took me a long time before I found the courage to open that door and walk into a group of strangers. I have never regretted it and as you can see I am still a member.
The friends you make help you through many a problem, someone to talk to and laugh with. We meet at coffee mornings, winter lunches and social events so even out of season we still keep in touch with each other.
You don’t have to wait until you retire to join us there are evenings and weekend games to fit around working people, after all the younger you are the more time you have to perfect your game maybe to County or even Bowls England or just like me a roll up with friends.
Don’t be shy, be brave and give yourself that little push join us you won’t regret it.
Sheila
