New Barkby WI

Vice-President, Dawn Haynes, welcomes New Barkby members to the institute’s April meeting. Jerusalem was sung followed by business matters. Some members spoke of their recent visit to Leicestershire and Rutland Federation’s Annual Council Meeting. This institute will celebrate its 100th birthday later this year and a certificate was collected by Alma Wright, from the Federation Chairman, Glenice Wignall.
Speaker for the evening was Ginnette Brookes, Dance Teacher, who gave members an insight into her work (starting dance lessons at aged four years). Now she talks of Dance Silver Swans (Adult Ballet), plus other dance forms and was assisted by friend, Katherine.
Under Ginnette’s guidance, there was an opportunity to identify different ballet music (e.g. BBC TV programme The Apprentice – Romeo and Juliet composed by Sergei Prokofiev). Then members learned various dance movements, with or without footwear, and not too many wobbles! See picture below courtesy of the New Barkby WI.
At the end of the session, everyone managed to make their own version of a curtsy, as a finale. All very informative and entertaining. After a question and answer period, the vote of thanks was offered by Dawn Haynes.
The competition winner was Valerie Cobb with a copy of a Ballet Music Book. The raffle prize was won by Gillian Weston.
The date of the next meeting is Wednesday 7th May, 7.30pm, Syston Community Centre. This will be our Resolutions meeting. Visitors are always welcome.
