June Open Gardens
The Old Rectory at Newbold Verdon LE9 9NN opens on 14th June, 11am to 6.30pm and 15th June 10am to 4pm. See image above. This garden contains ancient trees and many varieties planted in the last decade, including oaks, horse-chestnuts, mulberry, poplar, birch, and olive. There is a large, well-established rose garden which will be in flower. Hostas thrive in many flower beds, protected by the vast frog population, which use the pond, which also has newts. The lawns are maintained by Ingrid, a Swedish robotic pet. Modernist sculptures include ‘Untitled engine’, ‘Jimmy, the smiling wheel’, ‘Four glass globes and a baby one’, a double Moebius strip, and the last addition, a large armillary on top of the dead cedar stump.
Tresillian House 67 Dalby Road, Melton Mowbray LE13 0BQ opens on the 29th June, 11am to 4pm. A three-quarter acre quiet garden on the southern side of Melton Mowbray. Features include a wide range of interesting specimen trees, with a pond, natural bog garden and koi carp pond. In June roses, hosta, dahlia, oriental and asiatic lilies, phlox, diarama, and hydrangea will be in flower in addition to an unusual Tulip Tree. There is a working vegetable garden, heated and cold greenhouses.
