Thank You Syston Community Flood Group
Our first ‘Volunteer Morning’ digging up weeds and tons of sand and silt on the brook side at the Millennium Bridge. Eighteen of us worked like Trojans well, seventeen did – I was on traffic duty slowing down cars and blowing a whistle to warn the volunteers, oh the power!! All in all it was a successful day, everyone enjoyed themselves and the results were amazing.
Thank you to the volunteers for a sterling job, to Syston Town Council disposing of a substantial amount of waste and to the Brookside Club who provided water for us.
There’s still a lot of silt, stone and vegetation to be removed from there to Broad Street and beyond but it’s a start. There will be other areas that could be cleared of loose vegetation etc. we need residents who live by or near the brook to check and either clear it themselves (safely) or ask for our help.
We’ve complained to the EA about their contractors who leave their waste on the brook side, leaving garden waste on the brook side or throwing it in the brook Can Cause Problem.
This isn’t just a matter of tidiness (I’ve been berated for that, apparently it was the ‘fault’ of the era I was brought up in!!) over time the silt/sand and vegetation can all be swept downstream and cause a blockage. The mass of vegetation dumped by the last flood at Brookfield Avenue is proof of this.
Can you spare a couple of hours a month to help us?
There is a form on our Facebook page that you can complete or email or text us and we’ll add you to our list.
