Council Funds New Flood Prevention Equipment in East Goscote
A storage unit filled with flood prevention equipment has been installed in East Goscote thanks to funding from the borough council.
Charnwood Borough Council awarded £8,495 to East Goscote Parish Council through its Flood Locker Grant Scheme.
Last year, the Council made £150,000 available to support communities as several areas in Charnwood were severely affected by flooding due to heavy rainfall in recent years, with hundreds of households and businesses suffering internal damage.
Town and Parish Councils across the borough and community groups in Loughborough can apply for up to £10,000, to purchase storage units containing equipment such as aqua snakes, signage, and other tools to help protect properties from flooding.
Cllr Beverley Gray, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for climate action and net zero, said: “We have all witnessed the devastating impact flooding can have on homes and businesses in the borough. I am pleased we have been able to support communities like East Goscote through this scheme.
“The aim of these grants is to help communities build their resilience and be more flood ready.
“The community will now have access to resources which can make a difference during flood events, helping them to respond quickly and effectively.”
The unit near the village hall is accessible to trained individuals, including the community flood wardens, who have access to the equipment and can distribute it to residents when needed to protect their property.
Cllr Laurie Needham, chair of East Goscote Parish Council and borough councillor added: “We are pleased to receive this funding from Charnwood Borough Council. This equipment will give our residents the tools needed to act quickly if flooding occurs and help protect homes and residents in our village.
“We have also created a community resilience group and have been working on a community response plan to ensure East Goscote is prepared for future flooding events.”
Other areas which have benefited from the scheme so far include Cossington and Barrow.
