New Barkby WI
Dawn Haynes, President, welcomed New Barkby W.I. members to the Institutes May meeting.
‘Jerusalem’ was sung, then business matters ensued, with two resolutions to be debated at the National Federation of W.I.s AGM in June, via Zoom, were brought to everyone’s attention by Dawn, who had attended a briefing meeting.
Action on Women’s Homelessness. Homeless charities urges all levels of government to take action to reduce the number of women at risk so that all women can have a place that they can safely call home. In the census of 2023, it was revealed that women who rough-sleep do so because of domestic abuse or difficult relationships; even life expectancy may be only 43 years, so there is a need for long-term funding and housing.
Accessible Toilets for the public, with facilities to promote dignity, health and social inclusion. For vulnerable groups there is an urgent need to help people with medical conditions and also parents with children. 40% of public toilets have been lost since 2000. Currently, there is no statutory requirement for local authorities to provide or maintain any.
Both resolutions were voted ‘For’ with discretion powers for a delegate, if necessary.
A Thank you was given to Dawn for leading the discussion.
Afterwards, members enjoyed bring and share refreshments and some social time. There was no competition this evening. Valerie Cobb was presented with the Competition Trophy for the past year (to March) and also won the raffle prize.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 3rd June, Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm when Mr Steven Bruce will talk about ‘Antiques and Valuations’. Visitors welcome.
