Syston Bowlers Celebrate Competitions Success
A packed clubhouse gathered on 11th October to pay tribute to the winners of the 2019 series of Club competitions and to honour a number of external successes. Club President Pete Murray welcomed special guests which included Councillor Ken Pacey, Chairman of Syston Town Council, who presented the prizes.
Once again, for the third year running, the Champion of Champions Trophy was won by a lady. The new sponsor of this trophy, Chris Meynell of Chris Meynell and Family Independent Funeral Directors, pictured above, presented the trophy to Marilyn Wood, now an established County player, who also received the Ladies’ 4-Woods and 2-Woods Championship cups.
The Men’s 4-Woods Club Championship – this year, re-named The Mick Hughes Championship Trophy, in memory of a highly respected Member who had made a major contribution to Club development over the years while enjoying outstanding success on the green at County and National levels in the late 70’s and early 80’s – was presented to Ken Renshaw by Mick’s widow, Irene.
The ‘Syston Town News’ sponsored trophy for 2-Wood Triples was presented to Tyler Johnston, Ken Renshaw and Martin Warner by Editor Fiona Henry, pictured above.
Other competition winners were as follows:
Men’s 2-Woods Singles: Pete Murray; Maidens 4-Woods Singles: Brian Madelin; 2 Woods Pairs: Ken Renshaw and Martin Warner; 4 Woods Pairs: Derek Renshaw and Pete Murray; ‘Aussie’ 4-Woods Pairs: Dave Anderton and Andy Savage; Triples: Rod Heggs, Dave Hudson and Andy Savage.
Special guests at the event also included representatives from Club Patrons, Leicestershire Garden Design Co.
Club Competitions Secretary, Andy Savage, thanked all Members involved for their active support for the programme of competitions throughout the Season.
Congratulations were extended to a team comprising Roy Hill, Derek Renshaw, George Stone and Martin Warner who had emerged as winners of the Potters Open Indoor Bowling Competition in September and to the Green & Royals side who had achieved promotion in the Loughborough and District Monday Triples League.
A special Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Martin Warner for his exemplary commitment to the role of Green Ranger, supervising the major improvements which had been commissioned over the past two years, leading to the green currently being recognised as one of the best in the County.
