Syston County Council Councillors
Tom Barkley – A strong voice for Syston – County Councillor for Syston Ridgeway
I have had the privilege of serving Syston residents for 14 years, in various roles on County Council, Borough Council and Syston Town Council. I remain committed to serving residents, improving facilities and addressing their concerns and using my experience and knowledge to assist them. I am presently County Councillor for Syston Ridgeway, Deputy Leader of Charnwood Borough Council and Chairman of Syston Town Council. Syston is a great community and I have lived here for over 40 years; my children were brought up locally and I know the area extremely well having worked and lived in the town.
In my role as a Councillor I have :-
- Worked with the Police to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime to keep our residents safe
- Introduced Policies at all three councils to protect our environment for future generations. I also serve on the Carbon Management Board at Charnwood Borough Council
- Campaigned to invest in our highways and transport networks and fix the mini roundabout
- Introduced improved facilities in all our parks
- Assisted residents through Charnwood Community Action during the pandemic
- Obtained grant funding for local charities and local businesses to help them continue
- Held regular monthly surgeries to address our residents’ concerns
- Introduced a Tree Maintenance and Preservation Scheme
I believe strongly every resident counts and I am dedicated to serving my community. If you have any problems or want to raise an issue, please get in touch: email :-Thomas.Barkley@leics.gov.uk Tel :- 0116-260 5986.
James Poland – Fighting for Syston & the villages – County Councillor for Syston Fosse
Public service has been a key motivator for me my entire adult life. I have served the residents of Syston Fosse as their County Councillor since 2017, alongside serving seven years as a Borough Councillor and many years before that as a School Governor and Parish Councillor. I have also spent eight years working for Leicestershire Police.
The last 12 months has presented challenges like none of us will have experienced in our lifetimes. As a Councillor I’ve been working hard to keep services operating, ensuring key services are still there for residents when they are needed despite the huge financial impact and operational challenges covid has presented. I’ve also been helping the many people who have contacted me with their individual problems throughout the pandemic and getting results for them is definitely amongst the most rewarding parts of the role.
As the father of two young children, I very much understand the difficulties lock-down has presented to families. The challenge of doing the day job whilst my wife and I balance home schooling our four year old with the attention required by our four month old is a very real one in our house! Understanding these challenges and representing them at Council is key to services being fit for purpose during a pandemic.
I really believe with the ever-increasing numbers having the vaccine we can see a huge amount of light at the end of the covid tunnel. The long-term effects of this however will be with us for years and my priority is very much protecting services people rely on in a sustainable way for the future.
