Wreake Runners Celebrate London Marathon Success
Syston based Wreake Runners running club had seven runners competing in the 2021 London Marathon, with four in central London and three running virtually in the local area. It is estimated 80,000 people took part both in person and via the app on Sunday 3rd October. Of the Wreake Runners that took part several thousand pounds was raised for various charities, with a couple of members taking on the 26.2mile virtual challenge for ‘fun’.
Rachel Funnell-Waters raised £2,674 for her two nominated charities; The Brain Tumour charity and The Dogs Trust and crossed the line in 5h 24m. Catherine Murphy-Smith was close behind finishing in 5h 37m, raising in excess of £3,000 for Kidney Research UK.
Matthew Franklin had a great day completing the marathon with a PB 2h 54m. Together with work colleagues raising sponsorship from different races they have raised £1,900 for Macmillan Cancer. John White finished in 2h 59m and raised £1,100 for Wishes4Kids, a Leicestershire based charity that helps grant wishes for terminally ill children or those affected by serious trauma.
Rajan Kakar ran a local and scenic route around Charnwood, in 3h 35m. He raised an incredible £4,200 for the U foundation, a local charity which helps developing communities in rural Africa. Scott Beasley and Andrew Carmichael ran together out of Syston, the home of Wreake runners, and completed their marathons in just over 3.5hrs. The duo completed the virtual for ‘fun’, although the last few miles might not have seemed like it at the time!
Over a billion pounds has been raised for charity since the London Marathon began in 1981. Wreake Runners was also formed in the same year and the club is proud to be celebrating their milestone 40th anniversary this year.
