Town CC. End of Season Celebrations
At the end of September, following another successful season, Syston Town C.C. President David Fox and over fifty members and sponsors were provided with a splendid outdoor buffet supplied by Ann Thurman. Due to covid restrictions the usual format of a roast lunch in the clubhouse had to be put on hold for another year. However it was a superb occasion, for once the weather was kind to us and there was an entertaining match against Welby Cavaliers to watch afterwards. Before the game Chairman Ivan Spibey thanked all those people who had worked so hard to help the club during the year and he presented bouquets of flowers to Katie Hunt for all her hard work in getting match ball sponsors, to Jo King for her tireless work as scorer, and to Julie Wakefield for looking after the bar and putting up with the Bar Manager.
In October the club’s women’s cricket team, the Syston Sirens, held their presentation evening in the pavilion. It was a very happy and well attended event as the photograph shows.
Coaches Andy Woolaston and Bill Fordham were thanked by Chairman Ivan Spibey and all those present for their hard work in introducing and developing women’s cricket at the club. The Sirens entered a team for the first time in the softball section of East Midlands Women’s Cricket league. They finished a very creditable second equal in their division but just missed out on going to finals day by net run rate.
Many players in the senior teams also had cause to look back on a job well done in 2021. For the 1st XI, Umar Razzaq, Charles Wootton and Ram Ghuman scored centuries, Zahir Taher topped the bowling averages and skipper Mo Pardesi took 35 wickets including 7-18 against Newtown Linford. Ben Drake scored a century for the 2nd XI and Chirag Modi took 34 wickets in the season. Asad Pathan scored two centuries for the Sunday XI and Yash Patel fell agonisingly short on 99 not out against Market Overton. Caps were awarded during the season to Mo Salagee, Joe Howlett and Arjun Chowhan for their first fifties for the club and to Ayaan Pathan for his five wicket haul against Melton Mowbray.
