Farewell To Rosanna and Jennings

The Original Jennings Store on Melton Road, Leicester. Picture taken c1933.

On Monday 26th September some of the shopkeepers from High St area met to say good bye to Rosanna and her staff as she was closing down the shop after 26 years in Syston.
Felicity Austin gave a little talk looking back at the history of Jennings which began on Melton road, Leicester in 1933, picture above shows the original shop, now Fame Fashions.
She showed the group attending the sort of things that Jennings would have sold in the 30s and 40s. One was a lady’s ‘combinations’ garment in cotton knit made by a company in Wigston; label is ‘St Albans’. The other a pair of pale blue shiny knee length knickers made in England , Diang label, of Dicel, which rosemary recognise as ‘British Celanese’. (post war I guess). These come from her collection of garments made in Leicester for the talk celebrating Leicester’s hosiery industry.
Felicity also presented Rosanna and her Mother, Rosemary, two books, one about the history of Symington’s of Market Harborough and the other a history of Corah’s.
Felicity told us that she found all the established shop keepers along that stretch of High Street all very supportive and wanted to celebrate Rosanna’s years there, which shows what high esteem she is held in, with a number of them attending this farewell gathering, it also included a couple of regular customers.

Some of the Local Shop/business owners listening to Felicity’s history of what Jennings may have sold when it began in 1933, with Rosanna’s mother Rosemary Jennings Seated.
