St Peter and St Paul’s Church News
Joint Service
As is our custom when there is a fifth Sunday in the month Barkby and Syston get together for worship which is what happened on 30th October. This time the service was in Syston Parish Church. The theme was All Saints Day which was on 1st November.
Both congregations were well represented. The speaker was the Revd Liz Williams, Discipleship and Vocations Enabler.
Afterwards there were refreshments in the hall.
Memorial Service
In the afternoon of 30th October and close to All Souls Day on 2nd November a service of Remembrance was held led by Reverend Biddy Saunders, Reverend John Leonard and Sue Essex. Before the service members of the congregations of Barkby and Syston were invited to list the names of those who had died and they would like remembered at the service. These names were read during the service.
The service concluded with refreshments.
Remembrance
The children of St Peter and St Paul’s Academy held their Remembrance Service in the church. The children read poems and their own prayers. Each child wore a handmade poppy and left poppies strewn for the older congregation to enjoy. Community and congregation came together to honour the war dead and injured during services of remembrance on Sunday 13th November. Wreaths were laid and prayers were said.
Once again, the flower team have been busy decorating our church – poppies for Remembrance, foliage and candles for Advent and Christmas. If you would like to take part in this activity or make a donation to our flower fund, we would love to hear from you.
Exceptional news!
Our Treasurer and Secretary have been working very hard behind the scenes ever since it became apparent that the boiler in the hall was no longer going to work and a replacement would be needed. To this end they made an application to The National Lottery for a grant. The congregation were absolutely delighted to find that they had been successful and enough money was awarded to replace the boiler and go some way to improving the insulation.
The Associate Minister
On the 6th of November Mrs Sue Essex, who has been a Pastoral Assistant at Syston Church for many years, was licenced as an associate Minister. The service took place at St Catherine’s Church in Burbage. Bishop Martyn and Bishop Saju conducted the ceremony. Members of the congregation were present to celebrate the licencing. Sue will continue with her funeral ministry, pastoral care and will now lead services. We wish her many years of ministry.
