Twinning Remembrance Weekend

On Friday 11th November Syston Twinning received a small delegation of seven friends from our French Twinned town Deville les Rouen, Normandy for the Remembrance weekend.
Our visitors arrived a little later than they had hoped due to traffic problems.
They enjoyed a meal with families on Friday evening.
Saturday morning, we held our committee meeting, and we were really pleased to welcome the head teacher from St Peter and St Paul who joined us to talk about developing links with Charles Charpak school in Deville les Rouen so the children can develop their language skills.
This was followed by lunch and then in the evening we went to The Royal Oak in Cossington, which had recently reopened after a change of ownership, to play long alley skittles.
We were really honoured to have the Mayor of Charnwood join us for the evening and everyone enjoyed themselves, as can be seen in the photographs.
Sunday morning, we all met at the chairperson’s home due to the road closures in Syston centre and we all walked down to the Car Park to join the parade. The first in three years, it was a beautiful day and quite warm for November. This is always an emotional day for us all.
We laid wreaths at the memorial; the French bring fresh flowers as the poppy wreaths are a UK tradition.
We re-joined the parade after the service at the memorial and then continued to Church before going to Beedles Lakes Golf Club for lunch.
Afterwards we had a short rest before finishing the weekend at a member’s home for drinks and a sing song.
A wonderful weekend and the party left at 8am on Monday morning to return to Deville les Rouen with joy in their hearts and looking forward to their return visit in May 2023.
