Town C.C. Put Ground & Season To Bed
The annual end of season restoration of the square has been carried out once again for the club by Richard Shepherd. On this occasion he used a system called koroing which involves the complete removal of all existing vegetation and the application of loam and grass seed. The result has been outstanding and the finished product has received tremendous acclaim by other groundsmen. The photograph shows the square after the new grass has been trimmed for the first time by Richard and his team.
The success of the men’s senior teams and the return to the Premier Division of the 1st XI has been well documented. However many individuals can also look back on 2022 with great satisfaction. In total seven centuries were scored for the club with Liam O’Farrell getting three of them and in doing so scoring 1146 runs. Charlie Taylor scored his eleventh century for the club and remarkably his first for the 1st XI. This draws him level with the much missed John Mills. Mo Salejee also scored his first century for the 1st XI, next season’s captain Henry Whait scored his first century for the 2nd XI and Joe Howlett scored his maiden century for the Sunday XI.
Bowlers too had their chance to shine in 2022. For the 1st XI Zahir Taher was the outstanding performer who, with his left arm spin, snared 36 victims and for the 2nd XI Joe Storer and Ketan Dudharejia were the top performers with 24 wickets each. The season’s leading wicket taker for the Sunday XI was Dave Tebbutt with 19 wickets but son Ben now has 96 wickets for the team and hopes to be the first player to pass the 100 mark next year. A special mention must go to the evergreen Paddy Oakman who scored his 15,000th run for the club. Well done Paddy but he still has some way to go to catch John Mills who recorded nearly 19,000 runs.
The Sirens will be entering two sides in the East Midlands Women’s Cricket league in 2023 and the club will be entering junior sides at all levels from Kwik cricketers to under 17s in the Leicestershire Youth Cricket League. Contact details for winter nets and for all sides, young or old, will be published after Christmas.
