Curiosity and a whim took Alison Emery and Barkby and Beeby WI on a trip to Chernobyl in the Ukraine. With little preparation and research she visited the sights by Uber despite finding a dubious hotel and not knowing the local language.
She booked a trip to Chernobyl, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. 90 homes were demolished and buried due to radiation levels.  The desolate landscape was littered with echoes from the past. 7,000 people still live and work in the area.  She described how heart-breaking it would be to return now following the current conflicts.
