South African to Join Town C.C.
After the floods in November the cricket ground at Potters Lane is now looking in magnificent condition in early spring thanks largely to the efforts of groundsman Richard Shepherd and his team. The season ahead will see Syston Town C.C., after a year’s absence, return to the Premier Division of the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League. Both players and supporters are looking forward to seeing some competitive cricket at the ground and hope that many glorious summer days lie ahead.
The club are excited to be able to welcome South African Bevan De Lange, see image above, into their team this year. Bevan is 26 years old and is an opening batsman and medium pace bowler from Johannesburg who plays for the Wanderers C.C. in the Gauteng Premier League.
The 1st XI, skippered by Umar Razzaq, begin their Premier Division campaign on 22nd April with a trip to play Sileby Town. They then have a home match against Newtown Linford before going on their travels again to play Barrow Town. The club hope to repeat their success of 2022 when they reached the County Cup Final. This year after a bye in the first round the club will travel to play Langtons on 11th June.
The 2nd XI under the leadership of Henry Whait start their season in Divisions 3 East with a home match against Countesthorpe then travel to play Leicester University Staff followed by a home game against Birstall Village.
The Sunday XI start to their GMCA Division 1 season with a home game against Leicester University Staff on 16th April after which Ivan Spibey and his lads travel to play Belvoir.
The Women’s team, The Sirens, captained by Hannah Driver will feature in the EMWCL Softball Division 1 South. They begin their season at Broomleys on 30th April where they will play games against the home side and Loddington and Mawsley. The Burrough League team skippered by Joe Howlett start their season with a home game against Wreake Nomads in the Fred Parker trophy on 25th April. They then begin their league season at Egerton Park on 2nd May followed by a home match against Uppingham Town.
The club will also be fielding teams at Kwik cricket, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups. Unfortunately their fixtures will not be available until the end of April but as soon they are published they will be posted, with contact details, on the club’s website www.systontowncricketclub.co.uk
