St Peter and St Paul’s Church News
Churches Together in Syston
To begin the season of Lent the churches together organised a Pancake Party in the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Broad Street.
This was a thoroughly entertaining and successful evening starting with freshly cooked pancakes with a choice of lemon or orange slices or maple syrup and sugar, followed by a cup of tea or coffee.
When everyone had finished Pierre Castille, from the Catholic Church, organised a challenge. Tables of four or five people were given a hundred years old map of Syston and a sheet of photos of items around Syston such as a building façade or an old business sign, for example, to firstly identify and then find their place on the map. It paid for a team to have someone who had lived in Syston for a good number of years! See pictures below.
A voluntary collection towards expenses was taken and came to £86 to pay for the cost of the pancakes and a donation towards the heating of the hall, and lovely and warm it was too.
Lent Lunches
Throughout the weeks of Lent from 1st March until the 25th there were lunches in the Methodist Church Hall. A bowl of soup from a choice of three flavours and bread followed by a cup of tea or coffee. It was a great chance to enjoy some good, homemade soups and some good company.
A donation of £3 was asked but many people gave more. A final total for the six weeks will appear in the next edition of the Syston Town News.
World Day of Prayer
This service takes place on the first Friday in March every year as part of a huge wave of prayer circling the world for at least 38 hours. It is created by women in different parts of the world and this year was produced by the women of Taiwan. It is an internationally isolated country struggling to be recognised while it remains under threat by China.
Churches together hold the service in Syston and this year St Peter & St Paul’s church hosted the event. It was led by Wendy Hardy and Felicity Austin and the congregation included members of the Methodist, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches.
After the service of prayer, bible reading and hymn singing the congregation enjoyed drinks and biscuits and fellowship in the church hall.
Lady Chapel Memorial
A memorial board to the Reverend John Murch-Tucker, who was Vicar of Syston from 1887 to 1907, which was placed in the Lady Chapel has been beautifully restored and regilded by two volunteers from the congregation. We are very grateful to these anonymous craftsmen. Our own Banksy parishioners! See image below.
