Syston Twinning – Bon Week-end!
We had a fabulous weekend with our French families over the weekend of 9th to 12th May. It started with a late arrival, not the start we had planned, but we had some quick refreshments and then the host families took their visitors home for an evening meal. On Saturday it was free for the families to do what they wanted. Some of us went to set up the venue for our special VE Day 80 party night and then went for lunch near the canal as it was such a beautiful sunny day. We had a great meal and then wander along the canal before returning to rest and change for the evening. It was a great party with our special guests, the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE and Julie Ellerbeck pictured below with Philippe Appriou and Fiona Henry. We began with a short welcome by our Chair Fiona Henry and Philippe Appriou president of Deville. Sarah Clarke then started the evening with songs from the 1940s which lots of people got up to dance too. She also lead us all in the Conga, as we had the SKB VE Day topper and we recreated the conga! It was amazing and almost everyone, around 50 people joined in! We had a break for buffet and afterwards the Mayor said a few words and cut our special cake, see photo.
We had a faux raffle as we had put a raffle ticket behind each place name and we had bought replica chocolate, sweets and biscuits showing how much each item represented. The chocolate was 100gm and represented a weeks ration for a family. A great time was had by all with some people dressing in 1940s style outfits see picture. After the buffet, Eclectic brought us to the present day with an amazing range of songs. Sunday was free with families and each had a range of different activities from visiting Castles to boating along the canal. All too soon the weekend was over and we said Au Revoir until next time on Monday morning.
