Grow Give Live – Community Planting

June has been an incredibly busy month for Grow Give Live – we have been enjoying lots of planting activities with different community groups.
We visited Syston Scouts Beaver group to talk about growing flowers, fruit and vegetables, and the importance of pollinators – we really enjoyed seeing all their ‘bee dances’, telling each other where the best pollen was! The Beavers chose fruit and veg they wanted to plant and took home potted up seeds to see what they could grow. We have sweetcorn, strawberries, pumpkin, squash and beans all in the planters at the Scout hut, which should give a lovely harvest.
On a beautiful Sunday morning, we were joined by children and families from Little Miracles, www.littlemiraclescharity.org.uk, to get gardening at the planters near the Community Centre. We put in a wonderful display of flowers, and have strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, aubergine, peppers and chillies in the vegetable planters. All ripe produce is for the community to pick and enjoy; please remember to wash it first!
The allotment sessions continue to be very productive; we’ve made a start on our compost heap, have lots of berries ripening, and pulled up our first harvest of (very small) parsnips! The station herbs are also looking very healthy – do snip off a bit if you need some for your cooking – it saves on the plastic you get when you buy them at the supermarket!
