Syston Hearing Clinic Thriving – Smiles, Tears and Pasta
Optimal Hearing, a specialist hearing clinic in the heart of Syston, opened its doors on 4th December 2024. With nearly eight months now under our belt, it’s a great time to reflect on how far we’ve come.
Helping in Numbers
Our mission is simple: to help people hear as well as possible. That means detailed hearing assessments, expert wax removal, and highly personalised hearing solutions.
To date, we’ve fitted 104 hearing aids. About half of those were for people already wearing hearing aids—either NHS or private—but looking for something better. The other half were completely new to hearing support. We’ve worked with a wide range of styles, technologies, sizes, and even colours. But all have one thing in common: they’re tailored precisely to the person wearing them.
On the wax front, we’ve helped around 170 patients—some with mild blockages causing tinnitus or irritation, others with long-standing impactions. We’ve also retrieved a few foreign objects from ears, including bits of earphones, mystery plastics, and most memorably… a piece of dried pasta.
Tissues at the Ready
Improving hearing can be deeply emotional—for the patient and their family. It’s often relatives who tear up when someone starts hearing properly again. A few special moments stand out:
? A lady who video-called her daughter in Canada every day but couldn’t hold a proper conversation with her old aids. At her fitting, we surprised her daughter with a FaceTime call—and they chatted clearly for the first time in years.
? A gentleman with profound hearing loss who hadn’t responded to his name in ages. When his daughter called him at his fitting, he turned his head immediately. Tears followed.
? A woman in her 30s whose life had become increasingly stressful due to untreated hearing loss. After a long NHS wait, we fitted her with custom hearing aids in January. She now wears them with pride and can relax and communicate with ease.
Complex Cases Welcome
We’ve been surprised by how many complex cases have come through our doors—issues not just caused by ageing but by infections, surgery, long-term ear conditions, or trauma. Many believed they’d never hear from one ear again. Helping these patients has been particularly rewarding, and our clinic is well-suited to managing such challenges.
Travelling for Care
While we’re based in Syston, people have travelled from all over—Leicestershire, Norfolk, even as far as Bali and Australia. Because of our broad expertise, we’re able to support almost any type of hearing aid, including those fitted abroad.
The Team’s View
Clinic Support Technician Dee shared:
“The whole experience has been brilliant, but my favourite part is the variety. Every set of hearing aids is different, and it’s fascinating to see how they’re tailored. I love carrying out on-site services to improve hearing aid performance and helping fit people into our schedule when they need us.”
Syston: A Perfect Fit
Syston has proven to be the ideal location. It’s a welcoming town with fantastic amenities and a strong community spirit. Many patients have expressed how grateful they are to have this service on their doorstep—and we’re just as grateful for their support and word-of-mouth recommendations.
With nearly 300 patients seen already, it feels like we’ve really started something special. Every walk through town now comes with a friendly wave or hello from someone we’ve helped.
