Syston Community Flood Group

Looking back at our efforts over the year we know we should be pleased with what we have achieved but there will always be that nagging question of “could we have done more”?
So, what have we done:
– Established a team of volunteers.
– Organised 8 volunteer sessions using a total of 111 volunteers (approx. 14 per session).
– Cleared over 2.5 tons of vegetation, silt and rubbish.
– Cleared a blockage near the confluence of the brook and River Wreake.
– Attended the EA drop-in session.
– Got CBC to install the missing valve on the SUDs at St Hildas.
– Arranged a meeting with Edward Argar MP to ask for his help.
– Helped residents on Fosse Way whose gardens are flooding due to a possible collapsed drain between their back garden and Chatsworth Drive.
– Attended a MADS meeting to give a presentation on what we are doing and to answer questions.
– Contacted CBC to request flood prevention measures be installed at George Toon Court and to fill in holes in the mortar on the outside walls of a flat. They have filled the holes and have confirmed that they are looking to install flood equipment at all of their properties next year.
– Had a stall at the Summer Fayre to give out information and provide help to residents.
– Letters sent to Taylor Wimpey and Merton College re the proposal for 1100 homes on land between Barkby and Syston.
– Continued to ask questions of the Councils on what they are planning to do.
We desperately need progress to be made by the Authorities to slow down the flow upstream and to improve the flow downstream then maybe the answer to the “nagging question” will be a definite “No”.
Wishing you all Peace and Happiness, let’s hope the new year is a good one.
