NEW BARKBY WI
President, Dawn Haynes, Welcomed members to New Barkby Institute’s June meeting. ‘Jerusalem’ was sung, followed by Business Matters.
Speaker for the evening was Mr Steven Bruce, one ‘Antiques and Valuations’.
The talk began on how an Auction House may conduct its business, with estimates of items to be sold, invoices to be prepaid, and payment, once an item has been sold.
Also, because of emails and scams and offers of valuations through the postal service or telephone, there is also a possibility of money-laundering.
Large items, such as furniture are not so easy to be sold and there can be quite an expense to take something to a waste tip. Small items are now more popular.
As the talk progressed, Mr Bruce talked about valuations on a variety of items he had bought, from glass paperweights, a silver vinaigrette, spoons and a model of a German silver pheasant which could be opened by its head to hold some liqueurs.
Treenware – wooden containers for anything (e.g.’Snuff’). Models of animals are popular, created in a variety of metals or wood.
Mr Bruce gave valuations on items members had brought, and then judged the several items for the competition, ‘Something you would never sell’, the winner was Louisa Chapman with three medals awarded to her Great-Grandfather.
The raffle prize winner was Julie Malam. Everyone enjoyed social time with refreshments, also, including Mr Bruce as he continued to talk about his profession as an Auctioneer and Valuer.
The vote of thanks was given by Valerie Cobb.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st July, Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm.
The speaker’s topic will be ‘What it means to be a Magistrate’.
All visitors are welcome to attend.
