The Didgeridoo – A talk by Iain Tiddy for Leicester U3A
Australia’s Most Famous Musical Instrument – The Didgeridoo
Tuesday 8th February 2022, 2.30 pm
Christchurch Clarendon Park, 105a Clarendon Park Road, Leicester LE2 3AH
The origins of the didgeridoo (didjeridu) belong to a specific Australian aboriginal (First Nations people) cultural bloc from the Northern Territory of Australia – Arnhem land. The correct ‘Yolngu’ or Australian aboriginal name for the didgeridoo is ‘Yidaki’, and the instrument is reckoned to have been around for 2000 years. This is a fascinating instrument, both in terms of the actual playing and its cultural origins. Iain Tiddy will talk about the history and origin of the instrument, and explain exactly what a didgeridoo is and how it is made, both traditionally and by contemporary makers.
Iain Tiddy was born and brought up in Peterborough, but studied for a degree in Leicester and then spent around 4 years in the NHS as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, in Chemical Pathology, but then changed career and taught Science and Biology to A level, at Guthlaxton College in Wigston for 32 years until he retired in 2016.
