Message to residents from Mayor of Charnwood

As we continue through these unprecedented and challenging times, it has been heart-warming to see the fantastic response from the local communities which have come together to ensure vulnerable residents in Charnwood get the help and support they really need during the coronavirus pandemic.

I would also like to thank each and every person working for the NHS for all they are doing through the pandemic. They are so brave and it is important we remember the risk they are putting themselves in each time they go to work. We are also indebted to care workers looking after many vulnerable members of our communities and key workers such as supermarket  staff and refuse collectors who are ensuring critical services continue to operate in the borough. That includes our wonderful employees at the Council, many of whom are involved in supporting our communities through these difficult times.

As Mayor of Charnwood I have the privilege of attending many events throughout the year. The mayoral year runs from May for 12 months so I did manage to attend many events before the social distancing measures were introduced.  That was a real privilege and I really enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people across the borough.

Since social distancing measures have been in place, I have been helping residents in Thumaston, the ward I represent and the place I have called home for over 35 years.

Similar to other communities in Charnwood, I am part of a Facebook group which was created to help people in Thurmaston without any support networks.  I have helped volunteers deliver information postcards to residents; collected shopping for those unable to leave home and sign posted many residents to a range of services for additional help.

It has been overwhelming to hear Thurmaston come alive every Thursday evening at 8pm as we clap for our carers and keyworkers. I hope you are also joining in and using it as an opportunity to say thank you.

As well as supporting the community, I have continued to engage with residents from my ward and developed new skills as I have learned how to use Skype and video calling.

My time as Mayor was only meant to last a year but due to the current situation, it has been extended until we are able to hold this year’s annual council meeting. I have very much enjoyed being Mayor and hope I am able to carry out a few more duties and engagements before I need to hand the Mayoral chains of Charnwood over.

I know there will be many people missing their loved ones at this difficult time but it is important for us all to continue following the social distancing guidelines and stay at home.

We will come through this as a borough but it is important we continue to work together and help look after each other.

I want to send my best wishes to you and your families please stay home and stay safe.

Mayor of Charnwood
Cllr Brenda Seaton.
