Mark Twain once said…”New Year’s Day. Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”
Have you made New Year Resolutions? How long did you stick to them? One week, two weeks, a month? And then the same thing happens every year… we go back to our old habits.
WHY? That naughty little devil on our shoulder kept whispering ‘go on… one little cookie will be OK… what harm can it do?’ And of course, we know what happens then, one cookie leads to a whole pack of Jaffa cakes (please note that there are all sorts of cookies and brands of cookies available, we are not recommending any one LOL) The point is are resolutions worth it? For the most no.
There are many reasons they do not work:
- We feel we should do them. Often there is pressure from others too. They don’t necessarily represent what we WANT to do.
- Lack of motivation. Due to the above, often motivation is low to achieve the resolution.
- One day vs 365 days. How can focus on making a change on one day of the year be right? If we miss that day to start, then does that mean we have blown it for the year?
Thinking about it from a business point of view, that is like a company saying, ‘next year we will deliver excellent customer service’. Well does that mean that this year they didn’t. Of course not. It is a journey after all. A journey of improvement. Continuously improving processes to be better.
So why don’t we adopt this approach to our personal lives too? Think of it as improving, enhancing, nurturing ourselves to be happier, fitter, healthier, even wealthier, whatever it is that we want. The right language makes such a difference to our mindset. Accept it as a progression rather than as a start and finish towards an end goal. With this mindset, we will be better equipped to manage the tough days, knowing that they too will pass.
