Wreake’s Rising Stars

Over half term, a group of students from Years 7 to 13 at Wreake Valley Academy and Bradgate Sixth Form performed in the Leicester Music Fest competition at English Martyrs Catholic School. Students were entered into the Stage and Screen categories which was judged at different levels; elementary, intermediate, advanced junior and advanced 16-18. The students competed against similar aged students from other schools by performing a musical theatre song to an audience and two judges. They received feedback from the judges after their group performance and later found out if they have placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Lara Batchelor, Drama teacher at Wreake Valley Academy set up the team, rehearsing tirelessly with the students every Monday after school to get them competition ready.
Lara commented that ‘The students really excelled on the stage. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the chance to get back on the stage and perform in front of an audience’.
By the end of the competition, students at Wreake Valley and Bradgate Sixth Form walked away with 2 trophies, 4 medals and some very proud parents and teachers!
Carla Connolley, Head of Drama and Performing Arts at Wreake Valley Academy, Bradgate Sixth Form and The Roundhill Academy commented that ‘Staff and parents were very proud to see the way in which each student committed to their role, the hard work that they had put in and how they delivered such a confident performance. Everyone agreed that they were a pleasure to watch’. Furthermore, Carla explained that Drama Teacher, Lara Batchelor was an ex-Wreake student who had recently come back to Wreake to start her Teaching career; for Lara to be able to share her passion for Drama with young people in the same community that she grew up in was the icing on the cake!’
