New Barkby W. I.

President Shirley Franklin welcomed members and visitors to New Barkby W.I’s September meeting. Jerusalem was sung followed by business matters.
The speaker for the evening was the welcome return of Carolyn Boulter from Barwell and Patchwork for pleasure.
This was a hands-on session to create little owls from material, to be used as paperweights. Carolyn provided everyone with a kit for the task and with her expertise and patience, helped each person to produce an owl in a variety of coloured fabrics with circles for the base and eyes. (The eyes also had buttons which needed to be sewn on to each circle). The owls were stuffed with bags of rice for balancing. At the end of the session there were lots of owls adorning the tables after they were completed.
There was also a display of Carolyn’s patchwork items for members to peruse or to make a purchase if so wished.
The vote of thanks was given by Valerie Cobb and the competition of a handmade fabric item was won by Jean Brutnall, with a cover she had made for a stool.
The raffle prize was won by Carole Hughes who also served refreshments with additional help from other members.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th October at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm, when there will be talk on ‘Shellcraft from the Philippines’.
Visitors are always welcome to attend.
