Do Not Let Discarded Pumpkin Lanterns Go to Landfill …Compost Them

Up to four million pumpkins are brought to carve and display over Halloween with the edible flesh of many being discarded as waste and ending up with most of the lanterns in landfill. This produces an additional 18,000 tons of landfill waste directly attributable to the Halloween festivities.
In Leicester and Leicestershire used pumpkins need not be thrown in the bin after Halloween you can smash them to make compost on your allotment, at school or home.
Composting helps the environment and improves soil quality your school can help us to grow food.
Collect pumpkins and join the
Pumpkin Smash at Stokes Wood Allotment Leicester, Stokes Dr, Leicester LE3 9BR.

Local schools, clubs, community groups, pubs and Allotment Societies are asked to act as collection points for carved pumpkins and then bring them to the Stokes Wood Composting Demonstration site to smash and compost them as part of a morning Smash Up or drop them off by appointment. If you cannot attend the site still save them and they can be collected and smashed and composted as part of an afternoon Pumpkin Composting workshop.
You are welcome to bring your own smashing equipment or borrow ours. The site will be open for a public Smash on:
Saturday 9th November
10.30 – 12.30
Followed by Pumpkin Composting Workshop at 2pm.
We normally have over 200 pumpkins in our smash. Together we can beat that record, we have over 20 compost bins ready and waiting.
